“ Сочинение Лилиенталя вышло в свет в 1889 году и тогда же обратило на себя
внимание всех образованных людей, интересующихся вопросом воздухоплавания.
Заслуги О.Лилиенталя в деле воздухоплавания весьма велики: он начал свои первые
исследование в то время, когда самые выдающиеся авторитеты утверждали, что
решение задачи невозможно; это нисколько не остановило его; он продолжал упорно
работать по излюбленному им вопросу вплоть до своей трагической гибели.
В период жизни с 1871 до 1896 г. Отто Лилиенталь изучал полет птиц, строил
летательные аппараты и успешно летал на них. Летал по настоящему, так, как
никогда не летал до него ни один человек. Построенные Отто балансирные планеры,
по своей схеме и принципам были очень близки к современным конструкциям планеров
и дельтапланов. Удачный пример, продемонстрированный Отто Лилиенталем сподвиг
множество людей заняться авиацией. Именно полёты отважного конструктора
вдохновили братьев Орвилла и Уилбур Райт на постройку первого в мире самолёта.
Мастерские, где строил свои планеры немецкий конструктор, ещё при его жизни
стали местом паломничества множества ученых и просто увлечённых полётами людей.
За свою жизнь Лилиенталь построил несколько планеров, совершил на них более двух
тысяч полётов. А 9 августа 1896 года отважный летчик трагически погиб, выполняя
очередной испытательный полёт на одном из своих планеров. Его смерть стала
первой каплей крови тех самых железных неписаных правил лётной безопасности
которые в авиации пишутся кровью лётчиков. Своей жизнью и смертью конструктор
продемонстрировал полную меру любви к небу, которую может проявлять человек,
двигаясь по пути прогресса. Показал направление в котором современная авиация
развивается по сей день. Трудно недооценить вклад, который внёс Отто Лилиенталь
в развитие и популяризацию авиации. В знак признания его заслуг перед всеми,
свободно летающими людьми мира 23 мая, день в который родился Отто Лилиенталь,
принято считать международным днём дельтапланеризма.
